Talking Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 255

If I’m being honest, I had my expectations pretty low going into chapter 255.

After all, the last few have been rather repetitive and I expected this to be no different. But to my surprise Miguel comes in showing great promise!

He may not be the one to land the final blow, but I’m confident he will last awhile. At least that’s what I’m hoping for.

He’s already doing better than Kashimo, having landed a blow to directly onto Sukuna’s pierced heart from Maki’s soul-splitting katana. He’s jumping and dancing through Sukuna’s cleaves with relative ease. All thanks to “Hakuna Lana” — Miguel’s curse technique that allows his body to catch a rhythm to dodge curses with enhancements to amp his physical abilities.

In the later flashback, Gojo explains that Miguel’s technique is one where he can bring out both his and the opponent’s buffs and debuffs without the need for a domain. In other words, he can sustain heavy damage with few drawbacks.

If we consider Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (2021) to be canon, then it explains how Miguel was able to tank Gojo’s barrage of attacks. Either way, the technique is certainly useful right about now.

JJK 0 (2021) // Larue (on the right)

Alongside Miguel is another of Geto’s family, Larue. His ability is to be project an imaginary hand that he can use in battle.

Sukuna used a binding vow

In chapter 255, we finally get confirmation on how Gojo was defeated by Sukuna’s world-cutting slash. It was revealed to have been done using a binding vow. Sukuna sent it off without needing to use hand signs [Enmaten] or incantations. To be fair, many in the fandom speculated this to be the case, but it is nice that Gege officially put the the specifics in text.

YUJI, CHOSO, & MAKI REJOINS THE BATTLE

Our leading MC Yuji lands on Sukuna, almost bringing him to his knees. Love to see it. Not long after, Maki comes in slicing off Sukuna’s left hand and it appears she’s unaffected by the black flash. I wonder if we’ll get more detail on that or it’s due to her heavenly restriction. Most likely the latter. Choso shoots off a supernova, hitting Sukuna in the back. A lot is going on and Jump Kaisen is back, but not for

Sukuna regaining his strength

Right when all seems to be going in their favor, Sukuna lands an attack onto Larue and it's yet another black flash. All done in a sinister, cold stare.

This is pretty bad. Like, REALLY bad.

In Chapter 236, Gojo’s RCT output had been replenished but only as a result of hitting a second black flash. Sukuna, without Malevolent Shrine, lower RCT and difficulty healing his heart may now be able to rid himself of all of crutches.

I cannot see this going well for a majority of the characters right now. He already took out Larue and Miguel might just have to dance a little harder now. He [Miguel] became a top favorite for me in just a few panels, I’m holding out hope. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Outside the absolute hype moments of the chatper, were the character interactions, especially between Gojo and Miguel. Gege never fails in embarrassing ‘The Strongest Sorcerer’ every once in a while.

Gojo makes some racially problematic remarks about Miguel’s “rare skeletal structure” and overall toughness, implying it's due to him being black. On one hand, it’s on brand for Gojo to be somewhat brash, but also humanizing for him in a way.

I’d go out on a limb and say it shouldn’t be too shocking considering Jujutsu Kaisen mainly takes place in Japan, a country known to be homogenous. Foreigners met by natives with certain biases in mind, but particularly black people more so.

Let’s think about it. Gojo is from a wealthy family, based in a homogenous country. It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say he could be conservative in both values and beliefs.

On a serious note, I think Gege used this moment to criticize the many prejudices Japanese people have of foreigners. Gojo even offering an apology after making those claims is proof of that.

W Gege Akutami.

Also, Geto definitely went to hell.
